The Brazilian Congress on Geochemistry (CBGq) takes place every 2 years. Its first edition took place in November 1987, in Porto Alegre – Rio Grande do Sul, two years after the foundation of the Brazilian Geochemistry Society in a meeting at the School of Mines of the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. The next edition will take place in Ouro Preto – Minas Gerais together with the VIII International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry.

The XII CBGq/VIII ISEG is a forum for discussion and scientific experience exchange in all topics of the congress. This activity is linked to the International Year of Planet Earth, which is being celebrated during the years 2007- 2008- 2009 after a decision of the United Nations General Assembly (December 2005), under the coordination of the International Union of Geological Sciences and the Earth Science Division of the UNESCO.
